His Highness has assumed specific responsibilities.
The Prince has been President of the Monegasque delegation to the General Assembly of the United Nations since May 28th, 1993. He participated in the opening of the 48th session in September 1993 in New York. Since then, His Highness speaks on behalf of the Principality of Monaco at the opening of each Assembly.
His Highness chaired the Monegasque delegation to the commemorative sessions of the 50th anniversary of the United Nations in New York in October 1995, during which the Sovereign Prince gave an address.
In September 1999, the Prince has been elected Vice-Chairman of the 54th session of the General Assembly of the United Nations.
On Wednesday November 24, 1999, for the first time since the Principality of Monaco was admitted as a member state of the United Nations in 1993, His Serene Highness Prince Albert presided over two plenary sessions of the 54th General Assembly of the Organization.
The plenary sessions that he governed covered the following topics: the global improvement of the world's oceans and the Olympic ideal that has through sports contributed to unity among countries and athletes. This session concluded in the unanimous adoption of a resolution calling for truce in all fighting during the Sydney Olympics that took place in September 2000.
Prince Albert represented his father Prince Rainier at the 55th opening session of the United Nations General Assembly's "Millennium Summit" September 6-8, 2000 in New-York. During the Summit Heads of States and Heads of Governments from the member states discussed the role of the "United Nations during the 21st Century".
H.S.H. Prince Albert chaired, in November 1997, the Monegasque delegation to the 7th Summit of the French-Speaking World in Hanoi, Vietnam and to the 8th Summit in Moncton, Canada, in August 1999.
During the 36th International Commission for the Exploration of the Mediterranean Sea (CIESM) conference held in Monaco September 21-28, 2001, representatives of the 22 member states voted unanimously to elect Monaco and Prince Albert as the new president of the Commission for a 6-year term.
H.S.H. Prince Albert II succeeds His father Prince Rainier III who announced that he would not continue his role after this date. Prince Rainier has presided over the commission since 1956.
CISEM was created in 1910 under the patronage of Prince Albert I and is one of the oldest and most enduring intergovernmental scientific organizations in the world. The commission is funded by the member states who support the work of a large scientific network of 500 institutes and over 2500 researchers. They are united by a commitment to promote marine science for the protection of the Mediterranean Sea and its costal communities.
In October 2002, Prince Albert chaired the Monegasque delegation to the 9th Summit of the French-Speaking World in Beirut.
On October 5th , 2004, H.S.H. Prince Albert preside the Monegasque's delegation in Strasbourg (France) for the official ceremony of the accession of the Principality to the Council of Europe as 46th State member of the Organization.
